Grade R – 2
Before writing begins
-
Patterns to trace
Zigzags, waves and loops. These are the movements letters are made of – a child who can't yet draw a wave can't yet write an 'e'.
-
Shapes to trace
Circle, square, triangle, star, heart. A shape doesn't need a baseline – it needs space, so each one sits in its own box.
-
Left to right
Tracks to follow, always starting from the left. Writing direction is learned, not natural.
Letters
-
Print – A to Z
One page per letter, capital and lowercase together. The black key beside the letter shows where the pencil starts and which way it goes.
-
Print – wider lines
The same pages with 20mm lines, for a smaller hand with a thick pencil.
-
b d p q – the tricky ones
The four that get swapped, together on one page. More tracing doesn't help here – the rule is the ORDER: b and p start with the line, d and q with the circle.
Numbers
-
0 to 9
One page per digit, with the starting dot. Digits are written from the TOP – nearly all of them.
-
Counting to 20
Count, write, and draw that many dots. The digit and the quantity on the same line.
Symbols and signs
-
+ − × ÷ = < >
One page each for + − × ÷ = < >. The STROKES, not the outline: a plus is one line down and one across, not a shape to draw round.
For you
-
Where does each letter start?
One page with all 36 letters and digits, each with its starting dot and arrow. For the PARENT, to check quickly.
